RESCUE: On the morning of the 27th the schooner Lioness spotted one of the Birkenhead's cutters in Walker Bay. After saving the second boat's crew she headed straight for the scene of disaster and reached the wreck that afternoon, saving as many as possible. The gig landed near Hermanus and the people of Herries Bay gathered round to help and hurried to find food and dry clothing for the survivors. Mr Culhane, the ship's surgeon was among the survivors on the gig. He borrowed a horse from Michael Henn, offering the gig as security, and started off for Cape Town to report the tragedy. Weary horse and rider arrived in Cape Town after midday on the 27th, on the second day after the Birkenhead had foundered. [MORE]
